The Christmas 2020 we are about to experience, as we know, will be different from usual in many ways. Even in Zurich, the city of Europe that shines at this time of year thanks to themed events and happenings, Advent 2020 will still be experienced in a very participatory way, though different from usual since, for example, for security reasons the famous Christmas markets will not be held.

Zurich’s Christmas atmosphere can still be felt in all corners of the city this year, however: along Bahnhofstrasse which from tonight, Thursday, Nov. 19, will remain festively lit with its famous lights; in the heated outdoor and indoor cafes and chocolatiers that will delight and pamper all palates; in the finely decorated stores and artisans’ ateliers ready to tailor products to suit all tastes and budgets.

In addition, complying with all anti-Covid19 safety regulations, other events will take place in the city during this period. On the Bauschänzli, in the area where the Conelli Circus shows can usually be seen this time of year, a fantastic “Christmas Island” with controlled access will be set up, with dedicated decorations, Christmas events and themed menus.

In the Zürich-West area at Frau Gerolds Garten, instead of the classic fondue tent, a “Winter Garden” has already been set up , with several corners where you can enjoy hot drinks outdoors and where you will find many food trucks to enjoy great street food.

Fondue Chalet Züriberg and a Winter Garden will then be open in Europaalle, Zurich’s trendy new neighborhood near the station, where people can enjoy hot drinks and mulled wine surrounded by Christmas decorations and music, while the classic Märlitram, led by Santa Claus, will once again provide its unique service this year, touring the city in its new green livery and taking “exclusive” reservations from Swiss kindergarten and elementary school classes, thus not from private customers.

On the hotel side, at the Marina Lachen Hotel at the bottom of Lake Zurich, the Privat Sphären, i.e., huge spheres like Christmas tree decorations in which it is possible to eat, while at Hotel Sonne in Küsnacht, where there is usually an ice skating rink, a decorated Christmas garden has been set up. For those who want to soak up the Christmas atmosphere in one of the picturesque villages near Zurich, we highly recommend a visit to Baden or Rapperswil, where small Christmas markets will still be set up on the main squares.

All this, without forgetting that as of December 13, with the start of the winter timetable, the official opening of the new Ceneri tunnel will make it possible to reach Zurich from Milan by train the mere 3 hours and 17 minutes, about 20 minutes less than usual, bringing the two cities even closer together!
