There are places in the world where the boundary between fashion, travel, and lifestyle ceases to exist. GUESS Island, the American brand’s new activation on Bawe Island off the coast of Zanzibar, is one of them. This is not a temporary store on the beach, nor a summer pop-up with a logo printed on umbrellas. It is something more subtle—and, truth be told, more accomplished.
What GUESS Island is and why it differs from everything else
From May to August 2026, GUESS has taken a 30-hectare private island in the Indian Ocean and transformed it into the most coherent version of itself. Bawe Island, (a finalist destination at the Travel & Spa Awards 2026), part of The Cocoon Collection—the hospitality brand of Azemar Holding that manages a selection of luxury resorts in the Indian Ocean—was already known as an exclusive retreat with 70 private villas, a swimming pool, and dedicated butler service. But with GUESS Island it has become something else: a destination with a precise aesthetic signature, capable of telling a story without needing to shout it.

The project defines itself as “a beach club takeover,” but it would be reductive to leave it in that category. This is the first time a fashion label has realized an activation of this scale on a private island—and the result appears to have found a balance that many similar attempts fail to achieve: the brand is visible, but does not overwhelm.
The experience: entering the GUESS world without realizing it
What is striking, reading about the project, is the choice to let the brand emerge gradually. No neon signs, no aggressive branding. The visual identity of GUESS Island manifests itself through color palettes: mocha tones on the beach, deep greens poolside. Colors that evoke the vegetation and natural hues of Zanzibar, not those of an advertising campaign.

An exclusive motif was also created for the project, inspired by the destination and expressed throughout the island’s social, recreational, and private spaces. Certain elements incorporate local craftsmanship—a choice that connects the brand to the territory rather than imposing itself upon it.
Paul Marciano, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of GUESS, summarized the philosophy thus: “We wanted to create more than a presence: we wanted to create a feeling. Bawe Island offered the perfect context to bring this vision to life, introducing a new category where fashion, travel, and lifestyle converge.”
Bawe Island: the perfect stage
It is no coincidence that the choice fell upon Bawe Island. Often described as “the island within the island,” it rises off the coast of Stone Town, the historic capital of Zanzibar, and is accessible only by sea. Thirty hectares of lush landscape, turquoise waters, 70 villas nestled in vegetation—a setting that in itself speaks of luxury and discretion.

The resort belongs to The Cocoon Collection, a brand that has made sustainability a genuine pillar: the complex houses Zanzibar’s largest solar park, a protected marine reserve, and advanced water treatment systems. For a project like GUESS Island, which emphasizes the authenticity of place, the choice of property is no small detail.
GUESS and beach clubs: a growing portfolio
GUESS Island does not emerge from nowhere. The brand has consolidated over the years a significant presence in European summer beach clubs: Blue Marlin in Ibiza, Kalua in Mykonos, Ipanema in Taormina, Bagno La Fenice in Forte dei Marmi. To these are added Yuzu Beach in Turkey and the new Eva Beach Club in Dubai.

Each partnership involves the creation of exclusive motifs and color palettes developed in dialogue with the local context—a method that with GUESS Island reaches its fullest expression, transforming an entire island into a chapter of the brand rather than a single beach.
Why this model works (and what it reveals about contemporary luxury)
There is an increasingly clear trend in experiential luxury: the high-end consumer seeks authenticity, immersion, and a sense of place. They do not wish to feel as though they are in an open-air flagship store. They wish to experience something they could not have created themselves.
GUESS Island addresses this need with coherence. The choice of Zanzibar—a trending destination yet still capable of surprising—the structure of an already excellent resort like Bawe Island, a visual identity that dialogues with the territory rather than ignoring it: these are all elements that speak the language of the sophisticated contemporary traveler.
Whether this is destined to become a replicable model for other brands—or remains a successful experiment tied to conditions difficult to reproduce—remains to be seen. For now, summer 2026 in Zanzibar has a precise address.
