Aftermonths of “sky in a room,” the desire for open air embraces the night as well. TheHotel Tyrol in Selva, Val Gardena, has arranged a special package, which includes stargazing with binoculars while comfortably (and privately) lounging in the meadow of a secluded wooden chalet (owned by the Hotel Tyrol), located in the fabulous scenery of the Dolomites.
For summer 2020, a summer we will remember for a long time as never before will we appreciate the two major themes that have been with us for so many months: physical distancing (the lodge is booked for the single couple) and open space, in this case infinite. From the lodge, the gaze is lost among the outline of the world’s most beautiful mountains, as the great mountaineer Reinhold Messner called them.
A movie experience
The experience is unique and exclusive, to be enjoyed in a safe, natural setting away from everyone:in the intimate familycabin you dine and sleep one night, surrounded by fresh mountain air, at about 2,000 meters on Alpe Juac.
Dinner is “with a view,” served in the garden in front of the lodge: the delicious dishes prepared by Chef Alessandro Martellini are romantically illuminated by candles; fire gives the alpine setting an extra touch, and dulcis in fundo, a concert of plectrum instruments given by a quartet that comes up specially to the lodge to play under the stars. After dinner, astronomical binoculars are used to admire the celestial vault. With no hurry, no noise, in the dark night, the enchantment of the stars is pure poetry.
It looks like a scene from an art film, shot in a dream location. We climb Mount Stevia accompanied by a guide (about an hour and a half walk, no difficulty) through pastures, woods and streams, surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape, arrived at the hut there is complete relaxation in the silence of nature. The scent of grass, larch and fir trees, the flowers dotting the pastures, the view of the imposing Sassolungo, and the authenticity of the ancient Juac hut-all of these give unique emotions.
The song of crickets and birds is the soundtrack of this special day (and night): a candlelight dinner, Gardena specialties and haute cuisine, is served at dusk.
The star show, for two
When darkness falls, (there are no streetlights or other lights to disturb the nighttime gloom), astronomical binoculars come into the picture . Stars are visible even to the naked eye; binoculars allow you to see even the very distant ones, tiny dots in infinity.
Nature and the celestial vault meet and seem to be one. Stars, the Dolomites and a small wooden cabin where you can spend the night completely isolated. In the mornings, a hearty breakfast is served in the mountain hut, at the back of the mountains, in a stunning, sunlit landscape. Binoculars are now used to look at mountain peaks and eagles. On the way back, you descend accompanied by your guide, but not before having a snack in a typical Val Gardena alpine hut.
Hotel Tyrol, family atmosphere
Upon arriving at Hotel Tyrol in the village of Selva, one can soak in the pleasant atmosphere created by the hosts, Bibiana Dirler and her husband Maurizio Micheli know how to brighten guests’ stay with their smiles, opening their (now historic) home and revealing the anecdotes and philosophy that has always hovered among these halls.

Surrounded by a large garden, it is an ideal place to relax in the sun. Heated to 30 degrees in both summer and winter, it can be reached either from the garden or via a staircase that leads from the indoor pool to the upper level in a wood-and-glass construction, from which one can then dive into the new en plein air pool.
