Can a sauna be transformed into a theater? And can it become an attraction capable of drawing wellness enthusiasts from all over the world? The answer comes from Valpolicella, just minutes from Verona, home to what is currently considered the world’s largest sauna: a 180-square-meter structure that can accommodate up to 300 people simultaneously.
But the true record is not found in size alone.
An experience that goes beyond the classic sauna
Designed by architect and spa designer Claudia Taiani, the Desert Sauna completely breaks the mold of Nordic tradition.
The structure is organized like an amphitheater, where wellness becomes an immersive spectacle of lights, music, aromas, steam, and digital scenery.
It has even hosted unusual events for a spa, such as performances by the Fondazione Arena di Verona to the notes of Verdi and Bizet, and important international Aufguss competitions—a discipline that combines heat diffusion techniques, scents, and artistic performance.
The challenge behind a world record
Creating a sauna of these dimensions required significant engineering work.
Distributing heat evenly across six tiers of seating, synchronizing audio systems, panoramic LED walls, water features, and ventilation systems—all without altering the warm, natural atmosphere typical of a spa—was one of the primary challenges faced during design.
The result is a space that combines advanced technology and natural materials such as Hemlock and Ayous, maintaining an elegant and welcoming aesthetic.
A wellness journey inspired by the desert
The experience continues in the Desert Oasis, a lounge area designed to accompany the natural rhythm of the sauna circuit: heat, cooling, hydration, and rest.
Earthy colors, dramatic lighting, cocktails, and tea and coffee rituals transform the recovery moment into an integral part of the experience.
More than just a sauna, it is a new way of interpreting contemporary wellness, where architecture, design, and performance dialogue to create an immersive environment.
