Otranto, also known as the “Gateway to the East,” is a city that overlooks theAdriatic Sea and uniquely combines the charm of the past, the vibrancy of local culture and the serenity of a still unspoiled natural setting.

Here, the days flow between walks in the historic center, sunbathing on golden beaches and moments of pure relaxation in excellent facilities. It is no coincidence that every year thousands of travelers, both Italian and foreign, choose Otranto to find a balance between cultural curiosity, contact with nature and self-care.

The history of Otranto: A journey through time

The city of Otranto boasts ancient origins: founded by the Greeks as a strategic port, it became under the Romans a hub for trade to the East. Its past is carved into the stones of the walls, paved alleys and monuments that narrate glorious and tragic episodes.

Among Otranto’s must-see attractions is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, erected in 1163. Inside is the famous floor mosaic of Pantaleone, an extraordinary work that runs the entire nave depicting biblical scenes, chivalric legends and symbols of human life. It is considered one of the most important mosaics of the European Middle Ages and leaves every visitor speechless.

No less impressive is the Aragonese Castle, built in the 15th century to defend the city from Ottoman incursions. With its imposing towers and moat, it now hosts exhibitions, cultural events and guided tours that provide spectacular views of the coastline.

Strolling through Otranto’s historic center is like entering a timeless tale: workshops of artisans working with ceramics, flowering balconies, alleys that open onto glimpses of the turquoise sea. Here history is not only told, it is lived.

Art and culture: the beating heart of the city

Otranto is not just an open-air museum, but a living place where traditions blend with contemporary creativity. Art galleries display works by local and international artists, while ateliers guard ancient artisan knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

The cultural calendar is rich: from the Music Festival, which transforms squares and courtyards into open-air stages, to the Other Cinema Festival, which offers a look at independent productions and social issues. There is no shortage of gastronomic festivals where typical Salento dishes such as orecchiette pasta, fresh fish and friselle topped with local extra-virgin olive oil are sampled.

For those who want a more immersive experience, it is possible to participate in cooking workshops, pottery classes or loom weaving. Activities that allow you to take home not just a souvenir, but an authentic piece of Otranto.

Wellness on vacation: regenerate body and mind

In recent years, wellness tourism has become a fast-growing trend, and Otranto has been able to adapt perfectly to this demand. The privileged location between sea and countryside, combined with a mild climate for much of the year, offers endless opportunities for relaxation and healthy activities.

The masserie with spa in Otranto, such as Masseria Mongiò represent a strong point for those seeking a rejuvenating stay. Here it is possible to indulge in relaxing massages, spa treatments, wellness paths with sauna and Turkish bath, as well as yoga sessions or sunset meditation, perhaps in a garden surrounded by centuries-old olive trees.

Wellness also comes through outdoor experiences: walks along the Promenade of Heroes, hikes along the Bay of Turks, or trekking to Bauxite Lake, an almost surreal place because of the bright colors of the earth and water. Every corner invites slowness and contemplation.

The value of a complete stay

In Otranto, history, art and well-being intertwine, creating an experience that goes beyond a simple vacation. Those who arrive here find not only a place to spend a few days, but a microcosm of emotions: the silence of Romanesque churches, the vitality of folk festivals, the genuine flavor of traditional dishes, the warmth of Salento hospitality.

Whether you choose to lose yourself in the ancient alleys, explore the area by bicycle, or be pampered in a charming masseria, Otranto will know how to restore your energy, inspiration, and deep connection to the land and sea of Salento.
