In the heart of Florence at Hotel Brunelleschi on the trail of love
Romantic, elegant, charming, Florence has captured the hearts of generations with its timeless beauty and is still regarded as the jewel of Tuscany. With its cobblestone streets, soft lights, breathtaking sunsets, and belvederes, it is the perfect destination to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your other half. Every narrow alley, every bridge, every palace, every hidden corner has a romantic story to tell: in the city of the lily everything speaks of love and its infinite nuances, happy or sad, scandalous or not.
In the heart of Florence, near the Cathedral, there is a place that jealously guards the memory of a love born in England and grown in Italy: it is about the one that blossomed between the two poets Robert and Elisabeth Barret Browning . In Piazza San Felice, near the Pitti Palace, stands Casa Guidi, the residence of the two poets between 1847 and 1861. That between Elizabeth and Robert was one of the most famous and romantic love stories in English literature. Browing, a talented poet, was struck by the beauty of the young writer’s verses and so decided to compliment her by sending her a letter, this sanctioned the beginning of a true epistolary love affair.
The two lovers because of her father’s oppressions and obsessions were forced to marry clandestinely, run away from London and decided to take refuge in the beautiful Florence. Within the walls of Casa Guidi, which has now become a museum, as well as finally experiencing unhindered its history with its beloved Robert, the Browing wrote his most famous work entitled “The Windows of Casa Guidi”, where he stamped all his fervent patriotism in support of the Risorgimento uprisings of theNineteenth century. The house is now the absolute testimony of a love as passionate as it was hindered, it is the place where all the 573 letters of love that the newlyweds wrote to each other and is a pilgrimage destination for many lovers who want to breathe in the authentic romantic atmosphere of a love past but still relevant.
The itinerary in the sign of love can continue to the hill of Bellosguardo: the name already suggests that from this vantage point all lovers will be able to embrace each other while admiring the city of the lily as if it were a postcard.
Today this hill is a romantic spot from which to enjoy a splendid view of the city, but in the past, it was the stage for the love story between Ugo Foscolo and Quirina Mocenni Magiotti. The relationship between the two was not easy as. Quirina Mocenni was unhappily married to Ferdinando Magiotti of Montevarchi when he met Foscolo a Bellosguardo. The love between the two lovers lasted a few months in the fall of 1812, but their bond, so deep and unbreakable, lasted until the poet’s death. Quirina always represented a point of reference for the writer, especially during the period of exile. In the Villa Torricella, which was destroyed in the early 1900s, Ugo Foscolo lived for a few months, and it was here that he composed the verses of the poem “Le Grazie” (1813), dedicating them to his beloved.
Perhaps not everyone knows that Florence , and especially the Villa Medicea della Petraia, saw the birth of the love of the First King of Italy: the villa was, in fact, the summer residence of Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy. The king used to spend the summer period in Florence together with his beloved the “bella Rosin.” The property is now owned by the Italian State and it is possible to visit both the beautiful garden and the interior, where all the furnishings date back to the Savoy era. Rosa Vercellana‘s bedroom can also be visited on the second floor.
Walking hand in hand in the company of one’s partner through these iconic places that have witnessed the birth and blossoming of some of the most important love stories in our history and tradition is an extraordinarily romantic experience and a way to understand how, despite the inevitable change in customs and consumption, the passage of time and eras,Love is universal and boundless.
After visiting and experiencing romantic vistas, breathtaking views and hidden corners of Florence thinks about it the Brunelleschi Hotel to put the icing on the cake: in fact, the city’s most romantic and elegant hotel has come up with a special package for all lovers who wish to spend a dream Valentine’s Day in a unique atmosphere.
Santa Elisabetta is the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, one of the most interesting gastronomic addresses on Florence. It has been awarded a second star by the Michelin Guide since 2021; it received two forks in Gambero Rosso’s Guide to the Restaurants of Italy 2023 and two hats in L’Espresso’s Gourmet Guide 2024.
Located in an intimate room with only 7 tables on the second floor of the Byzantine tower that is part of the hotel, it adds refined atmosphere and fine cuisine to the enviable location. Since 2017, the hotel’s gastronomic proposal has been signed by Chef Rocco De Santis.
